History of the vehicle: The car was purchased new by an electrical engineer who was working for Volkswagen at the time. The car was driven until about 1975 or 1976 and then was put in a barn and covered. According to the story, the first owner’s son started the car on a regular schedule but didn’t know why his father didn’t drive it anymore. The son was born in 1955. The car was taken out of storage in 2012 when the American bought it from a third party that also lived in Nurnberg. The third owner never drove it either. The third owner owned a trucking company and collected German sports cars and bought the Super Beetle from the son of the original owner. Not sure how the American found out about the car.
I have been sharing the story on
TheSamba under the name DesignBuild. I have also posted pictures of the original title or registration as well as other pictures that document the time of ‘birth’. The odometer now reads 53,020 km. There is ample evidence that the odometer reading is correct and that it hasn’t gone around once.
The American or first foreign owner, claims that the car wasn’t repainted but I have found ample evidence that it was repainted the same color as the factory paint. His wife at the time was overseeing the work on the car and I don’t think he knows that she had it repainted. The cloth upholstery and the vinyl trim is the original and seeing that it is intact leads me to believe that the odometer reading is correct. The only upholstery wear is on the driver’s seat. I am looking for new upholstery material. The headlining needs to be replaced as much of it is in tatters. Some panels are perforated but much of it is printed to look like it is perforated.
